You should name drop Kathy "Code Blue" Dougherty, she used to work with the Maysles a lot....
(My friend Dave interviewed to shoot for Maysles - apparently the monitor they watched his reel on was all messed up but Al wouldn't hear of it and just thought the footage was crap. And so it goes...)
